Hours: 37.5 hours per week (8.30am – 4.30pm Monday-Friday with flexibility for service delivery)

Duration of Contract: Permanent

This is both a challenging and exciting opportunity to join a team of highly specialist nurses. You must be a first level registered nurse with extensive experience and significant demonstrable knowledge relating to palliative and community care. You will be providing direct support, clinical advice and advocacy to patients and carers and advise on pain and symptom management and end of life care.

Saint Catherine’s is a responsive and innovative hospice providing care for people with progressive, incurable diseases such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease, heart failure and lung disease.  We work with a wide range of partner organisations to deliver specialist palliative care knowledge and support to patients, carers and health and social care professionals in all settings.  We are seeking an enthusiastic, highly motivated person to join the team in providing specialist palliative care to community patients within Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale.

Job Purpose

  • To provide direct support, clinical advice and advocacy to patients and carers dealing with complex, distressing and unpredictable life-limiting illness
  • To manage a complex clinical caseload of acutely ill patients with life-limiting conditions and advise on pain and symptom management and end of life care
  • To impact on the services available to palliative care patients by contributing to the improvement, evaluation and development of patient focussed care, and to positively influence and support primary care professionals
  • To empower and facilitate other professionals to meet the palliative care needs of patients and their carers by education and promotion of the principles and philosophy of palliative care

Essential Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • First level registered nurse
  • Extensive experience and significant demonstrable knowledge relating to palliative and community care
  • Degree level qualification or working towards the same
  • Advanced communication skills qualification, or willing to undertake,  and excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Evidence of palliative care related continuing professional development
  • Excellent IT skills, including experience of using Microsoft Office and electronic patient record system
  • ENB 998 / equivalent teaching qualification / experience of delivering education
  • Post Registration palliative care or oncology qualification e.g. ENB 285 or equivalent
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the clinical nurse specialist role
  • Understanding of principles of palliative care, including pain, symptom control and psychological issues         
  • Experience of working as part of the multidisciplinary team
  • Understanding of principles of research and audit
  • Experience or knowledge of effective safe guarding procedures
  • Good organisation and time management skills        
  • A commitment to the vision, values and objectives of palliative care
  • Self motivated, articulate and confident
  • Able to seek advice and assistance where appropriate
  • Ability to set and work within clearly defined professional boundaries
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Knowledge of local, regional and national developments in palliative care
  • Car driver
